Beamline Scientist / Senior Beamline Scientist, I12 (JEEP)

We are looking for a skilled and highly motivated Beamline Scientist for the I12 Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing Beamline (JEEP) beamline at Diamond. JEEP is a multi-technique facility for imaging and diffraction studies of engineering components, materials and processes, under realistic conditions.  I12 is located on a short (5m) straight section of the Diamond storage ring and uses a 4.2 T superconducting  wiggler to provide polychromatic (“white beam”) X-rays up to several hundred keV, and monochromatic X-rays in the energy range 53-150 keV. The photon beam energy enables good penetration through large or dense samples, combined with a large beam size (1 mrad hor. × 0.3  mrad ver.) The beam characteristics permit the in-situ study of materials and processes inside environmental  chambers without unacceptable attenuation of the beam and without the need to use atypically small sample sizes. X-ray techniques available are radiography, tomography,  energy-dispersive diffraction, monochromatic and white beam 2D diffraction/scattering and small-angle X-ray  scattering (SAXS). Since commencing operations in November 2009, I12 has established a broad user community in materials science and engineering, chemical processing, biomedical engineering, civil engineering, geoscience, palaeontology and physics. Suitable candidates should have a PhD in one of these areas, preferably with proven experience of in-situ experiments using X-rays. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a large user base in diverse scientific areas, and will develop their own research interests.  The beamline is designed to accept sample environments and chambers brought by users, and has its own in-situ equipment; a 100 kN uniaxial mechanical testing rig and two small furnaces primarily for chemical processing experiments. Procurement of a new in-situ loading rig for tomography is planned. The appointed person will play a major role in this new rig project, as well as having shared responsibility for the other items of beamline equipment. Interaction with other beamlines in Diamond’s Imaging and Materials Science Microscopy Group will be expected.
