Data Analysis Scientist - Machine Vision

Join our collaboration to work with Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust to develop cutting edge data software using machine vision to help further understanding of biological processes at the subcellular level.

Your new role

You will be a part of a Wellcome Trust funded collaborative project between the Zooniverse team (www.zooniverse.org) at the University of Oxford and the Scientific Software team at Diamond Light Source. The goals of this project are

  • to automate classification of biological 3D images by developing the segmentation software SuRVoS Workbench (https://diamondlightsource.github.io/SuRVoS/). This will include working closely both within the collaborative project and with visiting scientists on various imaging instruments at Diamond Light Source to understand the project goals and help design and implement computational solutions.
  • broaden the reach of these computational solutions by integrating algorithms and workflows into the citizen science platform Zooniverse. This will include a strong outreach component to interact with the citizen scientists on the Zooniverse platform.
  • creating an annotated, accessible archive for all data collected throughout the process to enable further algorithm development.

This position is based at Diamond Light Source on Harwell Campus, Oxfordshire, UK.  For this role we are looking for a Machine Vision specialist to join our scientific software group to address the software side of the project. You will start by building on the existing tools that are in place, with further development to follow, through collaboration with our established links within the UK machine vision community and through new collaborative opportunities with groups such as the Alan Turing Institute.

Your new team

Working within a close-knit and highly skilled group, you will collaborate and have the opportunity to help and to develop other members, and the opportunity to create new projects. Your experience and underlying knowledge will permeate throughout the wider team, leading initiatives and inspiring others.

What you'll need to succeed

Your experience of collecting and transforming requirements, delivering and designing innovative software will lead to your success. You will be proficient in technologies such as Python, Javascript and associated relational databases. You will hold practical experience of the full Software Development Lifecycle and above all, demonstrate a passion to learn and think creatively in the solutions we provide to enable science.
