Principal Beamline Scientist, I06
A unique opportunity to join Diamond’s I06 beamline and lead on the development of our state-of-the-art capabilities for magnetic imaging and spectroscopy in the UK.
Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron science facility. By accelerating electrons to near light-speed, Diamond generates brilliant beams of light from infra-red to X-rays which are used for academic and industry research and development across a range of scientific disciplines including structural biology, physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, earth and environmental sciences.
About the Role
We have an opportunity for a Principal Beamline Scientist as part of our magnetic materials group on beamline I06. This group operates four beamlines, performing research on quantum materials using soft X-ray spectroscopy, scattering and microscopy techniques (I06, I10), soft X-ray RIXS (I21), and hard resonant and non-resonant X-ray scattering (I16). I06 uses an intense polarised soft X-ray beam (80eV-2100eV) to study magnetic phenomena using primarily Photo-Emission Electron Microscopy (PEEM) or a 6T superconducting vector magnet for X-Ray Magnetic Circular/Linear Dichroism. We also perform soft X-Ray Resonant Diffraction (SXRD) on the beamline.
This is a unique opportunity to lead a variety of improvements we are making to our facility including the commissioning and exploitation of an aberration corrected PEEM instrument that will offer state of the art capabilities for magnetic imaging in the UK, and will be operational in 2021. We are also upgrading our synchrotron to a low-emittance lattice, alongside major investments in experimental facilities, computation, and infrastructure as part of our Diamond-II programme, which is planned to start by the end of 2025. You will have the opportunity to contribute to this major upgrade of our facility.
Further responsibilities will include:
- Managing a beamline team (3 scientists, 1 PDRA, 1 technician)
- Leading the development of polarised soft x-ray spectroscopy and microscopy
- Leading and developing the beamline operation and upgrade programmes
- Conducting you own internationally competitive in-house research programme, primarily on I06, but also on our other facilities
You will have a relevant first degree along with a second degree in an area related to x-ray studies of condensed matter physics in magnetic materials, or you will demonstrate significant equivalent experience.
You will also demonstrate experience in an active research program in a field relevant to the use of the polarised soft x-ray techniques and be able to highlight your personal contributions to research publications and demonstrate international recognition for your work.
You should be able to demonstrate excellent interpersonal and presentational skills, with the ability to interact effectively with staff and facility users at all levels as well as successfully manage a team.
You will be self-motivated with excellent organisational and planning skills.
You must be available to travel occasionally in the UK and overseas including overnight absences and able to work occasionally out of regular office hours.
Diamond offers an exceptional benefits package to support staff in achieving a positive work/life balance. This includes 25 days annual leave plus 13 days of statutory and company holidays, along with flexible working hours and an excellent pension scheme. Staff also have access to a range of amenities on site including a nursery, cafes, a restaurant and sports and leisure facilities. A relocation allowance may also be available where applicable.
Please use the online application process to apply and tell us why you believe you are suitable for this role.
Where relevant, and possible for the role, we will consider flexible working arrangements and secondment opportunities.
