(Senior) Beamline Scientist I04

We are looking for a skilled and highly motivated Beamline Scientist for the macromolecular crystallography (MX) beamline I04 at Diamond Light Source. I04 is a tuneable, microfocus capable X-ray beamline well equipped for high throughput MX and experimental phasing experiments supported by an active Research & Development programme. Recent upgrades include state of the art robotics and multi-axis goniometry and soon the beamline will take delivery of an Eiger2 16M detector. This is coupled with the ongoing move to fully automated data collections as part of its repertoire of user access modes.

The beamline scientist will work closely with the Principal Beamline Scientist and colleagues within the MX group in the continuing development and evolution of the beamline including design, procurement, construction, commissioning of upgrades as well as ongoing user support. Future upgrade paths will look into new ways of sample delivery and flexible experimental setups with complementary techniques that will enhance the current portfolio of available techniques and in particular the Beamline Scientist will take an active role in developing these on I04.

Suitable candidates will have expertise in instrumentation and macromolecular crystallography techniques as applied at synchrotron beamlines and a good overview of structural biology techniques. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a relevant research programme which exploits the capabilities of I04 and Diamond facilities in general.

The MX village at Diamond presents seven world-leading MX beamlines with unique capabilities and is complemented by dedicated beamlines for BIOSAXS, CD, X-ray imaging and spectroscopy, IR-microspectroscopy and the UK’s national CryoEM centre, eBIC. In addition the village has established the first dedicated X-ray fragment screening lab (X-Chem) and an XFEL hub which hosts users, and directs UK developments at the SPB/SFX instrument at the European XFEL. There is a strong software development programme that includes lead development of the DIALS integration software package, ISPyB/Synchweb and automation pipelines as well as collaborative projects with CCP4. This is complemented by provision of state of the art laboratories for structural biology within the Research Complex at Harwell. Together with other world leading facilities (ISIS, CLF) on the campus and the future Rosalind Franklin Institute (RFI) the Rutherford Appleton site offers a stimulating and highly multidisciplinary environment.
