About Us

Diamond Light Source is the UK’s national synchrotron; a huge scientific facility designed to produce very intense beams of X-rays, infrared and ultraviolet light. Our scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology.

At Diamond we are currently undertaking a major upgrade of the facility, known as Diamond-II. Diamond-II will combine a new machine and new beamlines with a comprehensive series of upgrades to optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing, which will ultimately generate an even more brilliant light source at a higher energy.

Further responsibilities will include:

  • Diagnosis and repair of faults on circuit boards at component level.

  • Preparing materials and equipment for installation.
  • Supervising the electrical wiring for new installations.
  • Commissioning installed equipment.
  • Procuring parts and services.
  • Supporting the operation of the power converters, including being part of the 24 hour on-call team, power converter troubleshooting and repair.
  • Investigating beam trips attributable to the power converters and striving to minimise these.
  • Preparing power converters for operations after each shutdown.
  • Organising repairing and calibration of equipment.

You will hold an appropriate HNC, HND or Degree or demonstrate equivalent relevant experience.

You will have experience from a power supplies background including good working knowledge of engineering drawings and schematics.

You will also have a proven background in the use of laboratory-based testing and an understanding of measurement techniques.

Any experience in the following areas is desirable:

  • Commissioning of power electronic systems.
  • Switched mode power supplies or motor inverters.
